The Chinese Room – the ultimate luxury of its time 

In the 18th century, Chinese art and interior design were among the most exclusive items a manor house could possess. That is why Christianssæde was given its own Chinese Room, furnished with Chinese furniture and adorned with beautiful hand-painted silk wallpaper – a clear sign of the era’s fascination with the exotic and the distant.

The original silk wallpaper is now preserved at the Design Museum Denmark, where it is protected as an important part of our cultural heritage. At Christianssæde, you can instead admire a meticulously crafted, hand-painted replica, which gives an impression of what the room looked like more than 300 years ago.
