Tersløsegaard – Holberg’s final home
In the mid-18th century, the writer purchased Tersløsegaard. Not as a castle of power, but as a place to live. Here he spent his summers. Here he walked amongst the fields, watched the crops grow and followed the animals in their daily rhythm.
But Holberg was not just a writer. He was also a landowner. When a severe cattle disease struck, he lost almost his entire herd in a single week. Whilst others immediately bought new stock only to lose it again, Holberg chose to wait. Instead, he invested in sheep and horses. He thought long-term. Practical. Down-to-earth.
The only remaining Holberg place
After his death, Ludvig Holberg bequeathed the estate and his fortune to Sorø Academy. And against all odds, Tersløsegaard still stands today – saved from ruin by people who believed the place was worth preserving.
This makes it something quite special: it is not just a manor house. It is the only surviving place where Holberg himself lived – and thus the only place where you can still step into Ludvig Holberg’s world.
