Oluf Jensen’s Yard – The Pig Yard

This well‑preserved farm with its charming yellow half‑timbered walls and red shutters feels like stepping straight into a time capsule. Oluf Jensen was one of the town’s wealthy citizens. As a 16th‑century merchant, he traded in grain, beer, and goods from near and far. His farm was not just a home, but a hub of trade and everyday life.

Oluf Jensen’s farm is one of the most idyllic places in the town. In the early 1930s, pigs were traded in the yard, and every Wednesday the place bustled with life as pig traders from across Zealand arrived to do business. Behind the façade lies a world of commerce, power, and daily routines, where the sounds of wagons, voices, goods, and pigs once filled the courtyard.

The Tavern in the Yard

“The Pig Yard” is also remembered for the tavern that once stood in this beautiful old courtyard. A tavern that didn’t draw much attention from the outside — you had to know it was there. And people certainly did. It was a place where time moved a little slower. Regulars sat in their usual spots, and new faces quickly became part of the community.

Here, people from Køge met – not only to drink, but to tell stories, hear the latest news, share sorrows, and celebrate victories. The tavern was a breathing space in the middle of town. A place without pretence, where conversations were honest and everyone was equal. Here, the town’s small and great stories were told — like the social media of its time, a time many still miss.
Today, the tavern is gone. But thankfully, some places live on in our memories.
