Welcome to one of Lolland’s most fascinating manor houses – a place where nobility, power and human destinies have left their mark over more than 300 years.
The story begins with an extraordinary woman. At just 24 years of age, a widow and mother of five children, Regitze Vind purchased large estates on Lolland. Together with Baron Jens Juel, she built the impressive manor house that still stands here today. Look up at the façade – their coats of arms still tell the story of two of the country’s most powerful families.
From dungeon to wine cellar
Christianssæde was built in the Dutch Baroque style – the most modern architectural style of the time – inspired by the Dutch Golden Age. But behind the beautiful halls lies a very different story. Beneath the staircase lie two small dungeons where, in the 18th century, people were held captive when the lord of the manor enforced law and order on the estate. Today, fortunately, they are filled with wine instead.
This is just the beginning of the story of a house that has survived nobility, power, disasters, fires and human destinies – and which still stands here almost 350 years later.
