Smedegården "The Smithy" – like stepping back into the 1500s

When you stand here, you are standing in the middle of the 16th century. There are not many places in Denmark where that can truly be said. Smedegården "The Smithy" was built in the 1500s, and if you look up, the building reveals itself: the twisted chimney is no coincidence. It tells you that a blacksmith worked here. Sparks flew here. This was where the town’s tools, fittings and perhaps a horseshoe were shaped in fire.

But the most remarkable feature is not on the roof. It stands in front of the house. The two stone benches – the so‑called bislag stones – are the only ones in Denmark that still stand in their original place. For centuries, people have sat here. Waited. Talked. Traded. This is not just a house.
